Beirut – Ten Minutes from Your Home…
Never been to Lebanon? It’s time to do it, as the oriental restaurant ‘Dar El Qamar’ located in one of the most famous resorts in town Sheraton opens its doors to all those eager to explore the fascinating world of Lebanon and its cuisine.
From the very entrance you can feel that this place does not resemble all the others you had the chance to visit. Obviously, the designers and decorators of the place wanted to create a special atmosphere making the guests feel the fresh air of Lebanon, its rich culture and diverse cuisine. This is why in choosing the design of the place, they excluded ‘chic’ items and included only those able to depict the authentic life of what you might see visiting Lebanon in reality. Hence, the wooden doors, the cozy tables, the oriental decorations and most importantly – simplicity felt in every inch of the place.
A few words about the food itself, if we may… Few of us know that the traditional Lebanese food is considered to be one of the world’s healthiest cuisines. And this is understandable, as vegetarian recipes, salads and stews all seasoned with the combination of herbs and spices are in the basis of the tradition. Add to this that it is hard to imagine any dish without the use of such healthy ingredients as olive oil, garlic and lemon juice and what you get is more health and less calories. Another interesting principle used in Lebanon is the use of fresh fruit and vegetables explaining why the Lebanese women are so beautiful and slim.
The most interesting thing though is that apart from being light, it has another advantage: it is quick in preparation, suitable even to the busiest of you: “unlike the famous Egyptian dish ‘mahshi’, the preparation of which can take up to four hours, the identical dish in Lebanon [Vine Leaves] is much simpler,” – says the Chef of Sheraton Mr. Tarek A. El Naby, - “It contains less ingredients, and the cooking process is less time consuming.” – He added.
But this master of his job, who has been introduced to the preparation of the Lebanese food since 1991 told ‘The Sinai Weekly’ much about the long Lebanese tradition: “the drinks accompanying the food are served hot. The Lebanese make use of a lot of tea with different herbs the most popular of which is mint (or nana), but other beverages are also popular, especially the traditional strong drink of arak and the various Lebanese wines.” The dishes themselves are also prepared with care and warmth. Visiting this place it is absolutely a must to try such dishes as ‘Harira soup’, ‘Lebanese Vine Leaves with Lamb’, ‘Safiah’, ‘Spinach Fatayer’, ‘Apple Konafa’ and much more. The prices are more than affordable starting from 20 L.E. per dish and not exceeding 120 L.E.
But the surprises don’t stop here, as creating the special atmosphere; many details have been taken into consideration, one of which is the hot Lebanese bread baked by a woman at the entrance to the restaurant. Secondly, the ingredients of every dish are brought especially from Lebanon: “in the past the ingredients we used were mainly Egyptian, so naturally Lebanese who were visiting our place were saying that the food resembled the authentic cuisine but it was not identical.” – Says the Chef - “Now the situation is different, and tasting the olives lit with the sun-rays of the Lebanese sun, the light bread using as its basis the tasty yoghurt or the cheese, you can really feel the difference.” – He added.
We recommend you to try the food in this restaurant, as it will not leave you indifferent, and the point is that the place has many other surprises which you will discover during the evening. One thing is for sure the taste, the atmosphere, the music and the dances will meet your highest expectations. Give it a shot…
